Slug, snails, hostas, cannas. Organic methods?

I've been using copper tape and slug rings for a while and they're pretty effective. Untill a slug absailed in and attacked a canna this morning! But I've been reading that couch grass is toxic to slugs, and that cutting it, drying it, then using it as a mulch will stop slugs. Anybody else heard of this or tried it?
