Digging in the stray bits after you've removed the bulk of it sounds fine matt. Any large stones will rise to the surface as you rake it level and are easily picked out and the smaller chips will add to drainage, leave them be.
I was imagining you trying to lay turf on a 2" layer of stone chippings initially ???. I shouldn't laugh... bet someone, somewhere has done it
I was just wondering how much gravel near or on the surface of the stone is ok. Let's say if I looked at a foot square and could see 10 or so pieces of gravel. Would I need to remove some? Some is possible 20mm others smaller.
Also the gravel won't be as common in certain areas of the garden. Perhaps 10% will have very little... Will this be noticeable in how the grass grows?
I wouldn't worry to much about little bits of gravel larger bits need removing, landscape rakes are good for raking over and will help level and remove surface stones.
I had all sorts under my lawn, huge pieces of concrete / stone , I've been told the lawn area was concreted all long time ago.
That looks much better matt ?. Are those sycamore seeds? I'd pick them out as you weed and clear the site if you can. Each one has the potential to grow into a tree.
Don't get too OCD about it though, any sprouters you might miss can be seen off when regular mowing begins.
Fantastic. It's just so I know what to aim for. There are some stones the size of what are in the picture below, still in the soil, but under the surface. Is that ok?
Yes matt, the small stones are ok. You will never get them all out, and they can help add drainage to the soil.
The bonus of raking the ground over to level it, is that as well as breaking down the soil to a fine tilth, all the large stones rise to the surface and are easily picked off ?.
Good job. Now that you've prepared the ground nice and early, with time to remove any weeds that pop up, I'd ask if you'd considered grass seed instead of lawn?
There are pros and cons:
- Generally more choice if you go with grass seed, so you can easily choose the right mixture for your garden/usage
- Grass seed is much cheaper, especially for large lawns (I'd be inclined to turf if it's up to about 15-20 square metres)
- Grass seed may look a little patchy/thin in the first year and might benefit from filling in the gaps 6-12 months later. Turf is instant.
- People usually think turf is easier but IMHO there's not much in it. Preparing the ground is the hard bit, which is much the same for both.

Haha I wouldn't put it past people either.

Thanks again

Hi all, would you say the surface in the picture below is suitable to get a good lawn from turf?
or is more work needed? This hidden hardcore is relentless
more work needed i reckon
How about now? Thanks for your help
