Tree spacing

RitchieRitchie Posts: 36
Hi all, just a question regarding a few trees I have planted along my 4ft boundry fence.I have planted a mixture of Variegated Norway maples, Crimson King, Silver Birch and a couple of cherries about 7 trees in total. Over the years I would like the trees to act as screening above the fence and grow into each other. The question is I have planted each tree about 7ft apart will this be sufficient spacing to achive what im after and allow them to grow to a decent height? Here's hoping so,they are all planted now! Thanks

It depends on how much you want them to be proper trees and how much you want them to be more of a hedge.  If the former, then they're way too close together and will grow tall and thin looking for light and the stronger ones will outgrow and swamp the others.

Did you research the eventual height and width of the trees you've chosen or just plant at regular intervals hoping for the best?    Are they to be allowed to grow their full width into your garden?  What about your neighbours when they spread sideways over fence height?

Yes I did research the trees and realise the maples do get to a decent size, one of the cherries I think is called Prunus nigra and a small tree called "Pauls Scarlet" the rest are as I mentioned the silver birchs and 2 maples.

I'm quite happy for them to grow eventually to form a hedge just as long as I don't suffocate them with the spacing.

Now im having second thoughts maybe time to grab the spade again tomorrow!
