Now is a great time to plant things to get them established before Winter.  How about a climbing rose?  Madame Alfred Carriere (white) or Danse Du Feu (red) would work well on a north wall or fence.  You could also plants bulbs underneath such as Anemone Blanda, winter aconites and snowdrops or lily of the valley.

A whole variety of perennials could be planted now things such as Astrantia, Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' or Dicentras.

Then there are shrubs - Mahonia or Skimmia are very pretty.  This should give you a start.

  • You could even plant a tree - morello cherries (Prunus cerasus 'Morello') are good for north facing position and don't take up too much room - can also be trained against a fence. Flowers in spring, followed by fruit and good autumn colour. Also have attractive bark - what more could you want? image
