Hmm...well I ordered hawthorn, cotoneaster, and rosa rugosa both rubra and alba. No alba arrived, but i have a dozen or two beech! Ah well. Im easy going.
This one though, poplar?? If its going to be a big attractive tree ?? Ill move it somewhere else. If its not attractive, maybe could stay where it is? It will always need more trimming i suspect.
Irritatingly its on the back row, not the front, so its going to be hard to get to.
Are there any Poplars nearby? That looks like a balsam poplar and they are notorious for suckering quite a distance from the parent tree. It would be unusual if it was a seedling, as you need a male and female tree that flower at the same time to set seed and then exactly the right [very wet and no competition from other plants] conditions for the seed to germinate.
Whatever it is, it isn't what you ordered and is going to dominate that hedgerow, I'd take it out quickly and ask your supplier for something that you ordered.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
well i did want to identify - i was going to get it out, if possible (might damage it with it being on the back row) and plant it somewhere else more appropriate, depending what it was.
im not bothered about getting back to the supplier. Hedging plants are v cheap and i like the odd surprise.
It will Ok if you have a large garden and want a potentially huge tree. Take care though, you could end up with a charmless thug. If it's balsam poplar you'll know next spring for sure, the scent from the buds breaking is very strong. You could probably smell them now if you did a scratch and sniff.

I was thinking poplar. Its twice the height of the other plants already.
Yep, one of those two I think. Hoiking-out time, while you still can!
