Hi Angela 17, thanks for your compliments. I inherited the shrub from the previous owners of the property where I now live and I don't know what the name of the shrub is. However, I'm sure Chrissy the gardener's identification of the shrub is correct. Thanks Chrissy!
to check to see if I am right, because I might not be, have a close look at the stems. If I'm right they should be angled and have side growths on them like wings, hence the common name, they are quite distinctive.
Hi PP, acers were originally woodland plants so they prefere dappled shade wouldn't like cold winds, they can get wind burn.
also as you may have noticed my acer is planted in a pot, I'm on very alkaline soil here so although they prefere acidic soil and will grow OK in neutral they do not like alkaline. I can move mine around and will put it in a sheltered corner for the winter.

Sorry forgot to say the common name is Winged Spindle.

Hi Chrissy, I've inspected the shrub more closely and the side growths are like wings.
Many Thanks.

My pleasure SugarRay
Thanks SugarRay, Chrissy, definitely one for the garden next year
I had seen that particular shrub on different websites and quite fancied it but talked myself out of it.
On seeing your pics SR I've talked myself right back in. What glorious colours!
Thanks for sharing.
Chrissy your Acer is gorgeous too but I think my site may be too exposed. How do they cope with South Westerlies?
