I have been given this shrub or tree to replant. I'm having difficult in identifying it, and was wondering how to properly care for it. Can anyone offer any assistance?
Definitely hibiscus. I'd give it shelter from the north and east, as they don't generally survive below freezing. Having said that, in the lee of a north wall, with sufficient underplanting to provide extra shelter, it should do well. Alkaline to neutral well-drained soil. Won't do too well in the east or north-east unless well sheltered. Otherwise, in a large container and bring it in in the winter.
I think someone ought to tell my mothers hibiscus that it shouldn't be doing well in east Yorkshire , its been in her garden quite exposed for 7 or 8 years now and flowers well at the end of every summer , it gets no special treatment , my mum is a stick it in and see type of gardener

I'd go with hibiscus too. Looks like it might be a red one, maybe Woodbridge?

how high would they grow if not prunned

I think it looks very like a tree peony and they're fairly hardy depending on the species
I'm not familiar enough with hibiscus to comment.
I am familiar with tree paeonies and that isn't one.
