Mulching

Is now a good time to start mulching? if so, what should I use and how do I apply it please? I have a couple of bags of well rotted manure (shop bought) is this ok?

Autumn and early spring are good times to apply mulch. Your manure is fine. Apply it about 2 ins thick around plants, but not touching the stems.

Thanks Busy-Lizzie, are there any particular plants to avoid? I know it is good for Roses for preventing disease.

Autumn mulching can also protect plants from winter cold. So perhaps that depends where you are. Verdun is in sunny Cornwall. I'm in freezing Dordogne, colder than England in winter, but warms up quickly in spring. Just looked up what RHS says, autumn and early spring.

I don't mulch thyme, lavender, rosemary, poor soil plants, but I mulch herbaceous borders and roses. When I do it usually depends on my time and the weather. Osteospermums don't survive winter here whatever I do.

But which ones grew better in the end?
