Pot Roses

Last Mothers Day I was given a small Marks and Spencers pot containing four rose bushes all in flower.  When they went over I divided them up and planted in a large tub.  They did incredibly well flowering all summer, and still have some flowers on although the stems are very thin.  Can I transplant them into the garden or should I keep them in the tub, and will they survive outside during the winter.  Thanks for any advice.  Ellen

  • I've tried them outside Ellen but they all perished over the winter so I would leave them in a tub and bring them inside when you start getting frosts.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Mine didn't survive outside either. But when I brought one indoors it went rather weak and spindly and didn't flower as well the following summer. I now look on them more as bedding plants or long lasting bouquets. But you may have better luck than me as I'm hopeless with house plants!

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • I've got two of those a red and a white one in pots on the patio. They don't get any special treatment through the winter and they bloom each year ok. The stems are spindly but I prune mine when I do the rose bed in the spring. They have survived 2 winters here in Essex.

  • Thanks for your replies.  I will bring them in over winter as I live in Sheffield and it is probably much colder here than in Essex.
