My clay is acid to neutral, so yes, clay can be totally different in it's pH!
Pete - yes, they do best in similar conditions to many heathers.
It won't be happy if it's too alkaline, so if yours is, best to get it in a raised bed or something similar, where you can control the conditions more easily.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

It looks like what I saw in our loal morrisons this weeks for £1. They had tags on saying Wintergreen Gaultheria. I nearly bought one but went for some bell heather insead

I plonked Gaultheria procumbens in a shady clay bed, with some ericaceous compost. It's fairly happy, apart from damned pearlwort.
