Overwintering semi-tropicals
Hi folks,
I have a question about overwintering semi-tropicals. I've cleared an area of my garden ready to turn into a sort of 'tropical/jungly' garden and I've bought a few plants to start off (Fatsia Japonica Spider's Web, Ginger Lily (Hedychium Gardnerianum 'Tara'), Canna Generalis, Canna Tropicana Durban and a Sago Palm). I live about a mile from the south coast in Christchurch, Dorset and was wondering if it's safe to put them in the ground now. I have a neighbour who appears to leave her Cannas out over winter. I've got my plants in the greenhouse at the moment, the cannas are in flower and all have healthy foliage. Does anyone have any experience with these?
Cheers

I would keep all of those frost free under cover for the winter. I think if you plant out now, you will probably lose the lot. If you plant out next spring, they have time to establish.
Thanks fidgetbones. I was wondering if they wouldn't have time to establish before the real cold sets in. Do you think they'd be ok in an unheated greenhouse with some fleece round them?
Cheers
