Blood Fish and Bone``

NewBoy2NewBoy2 Posts: 1,813

I have just sown some seeds in a raised bed that has only had its compost in it for 1 season

I grew carrots , beetroot and parsnips in it

Is it OK to sprinkle BFB onto the surface AFTER I have sown some broad beans , beetroot and winter lettuce

I am building a second Raised Bed from scaff boards and it will be 4 foot by 4 foot and this time I am making it 2 foot 3 inches deep

? What veg can I grow that would benefit from the greater depth

I know there are some variety of carrots that enjoy stretching their roots !

  • On the subject of blood fish and bone, can anyone say if it is alkaline or acid fit for blueberry trees
  • Newboy2, parsnips prefer a deeper soil and will benefit from the new bed so I would grow those in it.

BFB is neutral valerie but while it will be of some benefit you need to use a proper ericaceous feed for acid-loving plants like blueberries.  Acid soil prevents the take-up of some nutrients and ericaceous feeds are formulated in a way that acid-loving plants can use them.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Newboy 2 , leeks are a good reliable crop

Bone meal is a good long term fertiliser but do hoe it in image

  • Don't use BF&B if you have dogs - they will do anything to get at it and eat it!  I dug mine in well, but they dug down and still ate it.
