When I replaced a dead climbing rose (it had been decimated by deer over the years, now have a fence) I removed 2 wheelbarrow loads of earth and replaced it with earth from the veggie garden, compost and manure. New rose is doing OK.
I have read that you can plant a new rose in a large cardboard box with new soil and compost and then dig a hole and plant the box in the place.
Mycorrhizal fungi, bought from garden centres, spread over the roots, help.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
