Lychnis and lavender plantlets

jo17jo17 Posts: 65

I took seeds from my magenta coloured lychnis this summer and now have lots of healthy plants 3 inches tall....also lavender cuttings which have taken well. They have been in my glass roofed shed . Can I plant them out now , put them in the unheated greenhouse or leave them where they are till Spring ? I am in Southern England.

In my experience lychnis is tough so could be planted out in a well drained spot that doesn't get water logged in winter.

If your lavender is one of the hardy English varieties it should be OK too in a sunny well drained spot but I'd be tempted to keep all the lavender and some of the lychnis under cover for their first winter as insurance.

Thanks for that.My gut feeling was to do a mixture of all the options ....just in case !

you have given me the confidence to stop faffing around and get on with it !

Hmm.....my only problem there is the mice who tend to enjoy anything overwintering in  the greenhouse.

I hate having to use traps but after losing all my sweet peas and broad beans last winter I did resort to them in the end....that and wire cages round all the plants . A lot of work.

My greenhouse has soil beds where I grow tomatoes, cucumbers etc so they burrow down from outside , pop up , have quick feed and push off when full. During the winter months I'm the equivalent of McDonalds !
