I would like to know how to pinch the tops out of the tomatoe plants and when to do it.
Janet, you only need to pinch out the tops of tomatoes (a) if you want to limit the plant's height in restricted growing space (eg, a greenhouse); and (b) later in the season when any new flowers won't have time to produce fruit.
To pinch out the tops - identify the plant's leaders, the main vertical stems that are producing branches and flowers, and cut off the top inch or so.
Many seeds can be sown at intervals, if you look on the back of the packet it will give you an idea when they can be sown. I sow about a dozen Little Gem lettuce seeds every couple of weeks once the soil has warmed up a bit, to complement my salad mixes.
If you are a fan of pea shoots, then invest in a packet of dried peas and sow in a trough. A packet will last you 3 years!
I try and grow salad leaves in the garden ,but I'm fed up of slugs getting them even under cover they get them, and if I leave them open the pigeons get them I just can't win, any advise would be appreciated, I have a greenhouse and the slugs seem to get in!!!!
i sowed some salad leaves seeds 10 days ago outside in a shallow planter i built from pallets which is on my north facing fence and they have appeared already, i just water them when the compost is getting a bit dry

It depends entirely on what type of veg you want to grow, Mr b. Generally speaking, summer crops should be being sown now.
Thank you

I grow salad leaves in a seed tray on a shelf in the greenhouse
If you have clean compost and seedtray, you shouldn't be bothered by slugs.
So you think I should grow lettuces in the greenhouse until the they are larger enough before planting them in my veg patch ?
Thank you

If you're worried about the slugs you should probably grow in the greenhouse, violet.
Thank you all just wish me luck, I'll try anything!
