Composting
Hi everyone
We acquired an allotment beg August, which we are thrilled about, despite being complete novices! We have worked really hard the last couple of months, preparing the ground, erecting a shed & polytunnel etc. We have spuds, purple sprouting, cauliflower, leeks, sprouts & beetroot planted so far. It all seems to be growing really well, so hopefully we be lucky and get something out of it.
We are now looking at introducing compost bins. I would be grateful for any advice on this. E.g. plastic compost bins, I've seen some people build their own out of pallets. What would you recommend? And how many?
We are also considering 3 or 4 chickens? What are your thoughts?
I look forward to hearing your advice.

On our allotments the commitee dicourage keeping chickens because they encourage rats. There are lots of web sites that explain how to compost. Just type in 'making home compost.' Both pallets and plastic bins do the job although pallet composters make it easier to turn the compost for aeration it as it matures. Aeration allows the microbes, which break down the compost, to do their job better.
And yes, they do attract rats unless you clear away all surplus food every day.
Thank you for all your thoughts and advice, most helpful and food for thought regarding chickens.
We are allowed chickens at our allotment, several other people have them, and they all seem to help one another when on holiday etc. and have said the same to us, which is good to know. Also we only live a 3 minute walk away which is great, there is literally a public footpath and hedge between us, we're so lucky! I know what you mean about the rats, fortunately most chicken owners on our allotment are very good and clean, apart from one, but the site reps keep a check. I know for sure that we would be very mindful of this and make sure all is clean (my partner is a clean freak!!)
I think the compost bin project will commence this weekend...........our neighours are already giving me their veggie peelings!!
Thanks again for the advice.
