old roses
My house was built in 1927 and I'm looking for roses which would have been available/popular at that time, or early 1930s.
The roses will be planted in a small border and grown against a smallish (about 5 foot high) brick wall.
Any suggestions of varieties? (fragrant if possible)

'New Dawn' is a good one and dates from about 1930 but maybe a little too tall for your situation, but could be trained sideways along the wall and on top of the wall. It's a smallish climber to about 8', a nice shade of pale pink and is a repeat flowerer with a long season. What I like about it is that it flowers nicely and when the flowers fade it drops the petals so there are no brown dead flowers left on it. It has a moderate scent, not really heavily scented.
The Classic Roses website has the option (down the left hand side of the page) to filter for a specific date range - I've selected 1930-1949 http://www.classicroses.co.uk/productindex.php?type=rose&prodfinderformroseYear=1930-1949
There's a great choice - you can narrow it down by also selecting the type and colour of rose that you want.
Hope that helps
