Help identifying loathsome weed

kerokero Posts: 2

Im losing the battle and also my mind with an unidentified plant in my garden.

I found it growing in the beds when I moved in and thought I had removed it all, but it keeps bursting up all over my lawn. Very fast growing - tends to be several inches high if I leave the lawn without mowing for a week. I've been trying to dig out all the roots, but am just destroying all the grass.

I'm a newb to gardening, so any advice would be appreciated.

I think that's green alkanet, Pentaglossis sempervirens, but it might be one of the comphreys. it doesn't make much difference really, both are hard to deal with. You can't get the whole root out, roots go down a very long way and break off when you dig.

I'd just keep mowing them off but I don't care for a pristine lawn. I'm sure someone will advise re herbicide

Thanks for the replies. I've found exactly that issue with the roots - they go very deep and break off easily. I need to look into killing it with chemicals maybe. Or nuke the entire site from orbit....

If you're into chemicals, glyphosate applied (to the leaves; mind the grass) in spring will do it, but no plant can survive the repeated total removal of all its top growth.  If you mow once (or ideally twice) a week and cut off what appears in between it should eventually give up.
