Looks like a Peony.
Not too sure though
Yes, it's a herbaceous peony. Short flowering season, but they sure make up for it with magnificent blooms like that one!
Fantastic guys, just had a quick read up on it and as we plan on moving after summer towards autumn might be cheeky and divide it,so can have a freebie for new garden (if timmings of move are right) if not I now know exactly what it is, Thanks!
Peonies resent disturbance, you might not kill the plant but they have been known to stop flowering for some time after
I dug up, split and replanted mine last autumn, now have two huge flowering plants. Bought a red one on an auction about 3 weeks ago, the lady dug it up and didn't get all the roots, but it has taken well. Just make sure you don't plant it any deeper than what it was before, they don't like to be deep.
Had to dig up a peony in a friends garden to get rid of ground elder entangled in the roots; seems to be surviving. Don't know about chopping it in half. Peonys can be bought in most garden centres and nurserys
