Do we have a bird expert on the forum?

i have just come in from the garden and a flock of geese were overhead They always make me smile as they as they are so noisy and I imagine their chat however it struck me just now why are they so noisy! Do they not need to conserve energy for their flight? Nature usually gets things right but this time I am wondering!!!

As I understand it, they fly in family groups and keep in touch by calling to each other.

Wow thanks everyone, I love to think they are gossiping and encouraging each other.

it also fascinates me to see how they change leadership, I love watching them, even the dogs stop to look up but I think they are wishing just one might fall out the sky!

pansy I do hope they are above any pollution but it must be a problem

can I just say ,it's a skein of geese when they're in flight, a flock when they're on the ground.

Just to confirm what others have said.  The noises are contact calls within the group which can be just a family group but large skeins obviously contain more than just family members. Thousands and thousands of geese are arriving in the UK now so keep your eyes peeled.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
