It's odd, there wasn't an unusual load. Perhaps it reached a critical mass and finally started to bake. I was surprised at the heat in there. The dalek isn't in full sun and it's late in the year, so I hadn't really considered this being the cause.
Thanks Jen, I think I knew most of that, the problem with a dalek is that I'm reluctant to turn the compost, as I want the finished stuff at the bottom and the newest stuff at the top. I really need to get a couple on the go.
Poor old worms. I feel really sorry for them, they'd been doing such a good job!
Agreed. Unless you work your butt off turning them every fortnight, dalek bins are essentially anaerobic cold composters.
Back in the day, I found that introducing lots of twiggy material made the bin more aerobic and thus quicker (I discarded, or re-used the twigs later).
Your wormageddon episode, like mine, was caused by something that affected them all simultaneously. Not poison, not dryness. Simply unbearable heat.
