Worm soup

It's odd, there wasn't an unusual load.  Perhaps it reached a critical mass and finally started to bake.   I was surprised at the heat in there. The dalek isn't in full sun and it's late in the year, so I hadn't really considered this being the cause.

Thanks Jen, I think I knew most of that, the problem with a dalek is that I'm reluctant to turn the compost, as I want the finished stuff at the bottom and the newest stuff at the top.  I really need to get a couple on the go.

Poor old worms.  I feel really sorry for them, they'd been doing such a good job!

  • Agreed. Unless you work your butt off turning them every fortnight, dalek bins are essentially anaerobic cold composters.

Back in the day, I found that introducing lots of twiggy material made the bin more aerobic and thus quicker (I discarded, or re-used the twigs later).

Your wormageddon episode, like mine, was caused by something that affected them all simultaneously. Not poison, not dryness. Simply unbearable heat.

image The good news is that the worms did make a return, this photo was taken in the following May after the loss in October.
