Just asked OH - they are gravel boards - 6x1. He then made it so that it fits three large seed trays at the bottom.
As for propping half way, think you would need some drilled holes on the front edge as well, then you could put shorter canes in there for the same overall effect.
OH would like pictures when you are done - he is now feeling rather proud of his decade old handiwork !!

Tell your OH that I am very much a novice and my OH is very unhandy - still I think we will have a go at some time. I will let you know though
