Over-wintering plants

snowy43snowy43 Posts: 118

I'm sorting out my fading summer pots, and I'd like to know if I could take cuttings or even over winter a few of the plants.

The 3 I'd like advice about are the Silver Helichrysum, Argranthemum and Lysimachia [nummularia gold]. I have a semi heated greenhouse to keep them in.

Are they worth keeping?

the lysmimachia grows like a weed here in Devon.

If you have a porch or conservatory you might keep them going, but, I'd suggest you might be better buying nice fresh young plants of the others in spring

Thanks both for your advice. Will certainly take cuttings of the argyranthemums as they were quite expensive. Won't bother about the other two.

Try planting the Lysmimachia in a border, I grow it as an edger and it grows no problem here in the NE with our cold wet winters. Nothing to lose!

Verdun, is it too late for penstemon cuttings?

Give them a try Hosta, I still have some not quite rooted yet. Maybe in the conservatory rather than the poly, it's getting quite cold at nights here.

Lyn, might I be better waiting until Spring now?

Nothing to lose, Hosta, they will be chopped down in Spring anyway, I have some rooted, some still green and will root. I would bring them in the conservatory now though, it's getting cold at nights for the poly.

I don't bother to overwinter Argyranthimums, last year I collect seed but from the orange and white ones i collected from, they all came out pink! I didn't mind, I like surprises.
