    Those are aerial roots, just leave them to do their thing. Any that are shrivelled I cut back and new fresher ones will appear.

    What are you holding in your arms?  From where I'm sitting and being a knitter it looks like many balls of wool in variegated colours.

    Its a very big bunch of roses that have been stood in different food colours (I think). I bought them when visiting my father in law and they cost £2.
