Magnolia shrub leaves curling and turning brown

Hi. Please could someone give me some advice on a Magnolia shrub I planted about a year and a half ago? The leaves are curling and turning brown at the edges. I have taken some photos but not sure how I post them on here. We have acidic soil.

it should have dropped its leaves last winter as well, its not inside by any chance is it?

  • No. It's outside. I have 3 small magnolia shrubs which have not dropped any leaves since I've had them. Something does seem to be chomping away at the leaves though!

Could be lack of water or,  alternatively, too much - ie sitting in a soggy site. What's the soil like where you have them Ruth?

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • We have acidic/clay soil so you may be right. I have moved the location of it this summer. Was wondering whether to prune the damaged leaves and see what happens? Any advice would be most welcome!
  • Think it may be lack of water. I am quite bad at watering!

They don't like to dry out. After watering thoroughly, apply a mulch, as that helps to retain water , especially in dry spells. If you incorporate some well rotted manure in to the surrounding soil that will also help the soil structure and prevent lots of moisture loss.

If there's lots of other planting nearby (especially large shrubs or trees)  there's more competition for water, so just be vigilant, particularly through summer, if you don't get lots of heavy rainfall.  The tree canopy prevents water penetration as well  image

  • Ok. I will endeavour to keep it well watered (easy in this weather!) I have put chipped bark round. Will this help? Thanks for your advice
  • Hi. Please could give some advise on brown leaves on my magnolia? I have had it for some six or seven months, so do not expect it to flower now, as I know it might actually take years. I am growing it indoor and would not be so bad, if only its leaves were green! They have been turning brown as in the image, and gnats are hovering around the pot and over the soil. What am I doing wrong???

It was given to me as a present and I would love to keep it nice and healthy, but it just looks so wrong!

Any advise will be much appreciated!
