Is the second one a quince?
There are Apple Days coming up all over the country in the next few weeks. You should get a proper identification at one.
The first is a medlar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mespilus_germanica
and the second one looks like a quince https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quince

Great thank you, I thought Quince for the second one. I can't believe the medlar will ever be edible the way is currently tastes though!
Yes, medlars are pretty much inedible until they have been frosted (and some would say almost rotting.)
I love pheasant cooked like this http://www.souvigne.com/recipes/main770.htm with the addition of one or two chopped quince along with the two apples and veg in the cooking pot. Absolutely delicious.
