I've planning to plant some of my tulip bulbs in containers next month - is there anything I can plant in with them so the pots don't look empty until they flower?
At this time of year you are quite limited but pansies are easily available now and will last until the bulbs appear. You could also plant earler flowering bulbs above the tulips such as iris reticuli, snowdrops etc. In general, tulips are plated deepest and the smaller bulbs above them - each type at a depth of about twice the bulb's size. Layering bulbs is a pretty standard way to do this.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
