Red Hot Pokers
Hello there, I have finally managed to set up a profile on here! (think thats what its called?) - after about 2 years of looking through the forum for answers to the many queries I have with my garden and always hoping someone else might ask the question that Ive been wanting to ask! I thought it was about time to to take the plunge and join up so that I can ask a question as you are all so knowledgable and helpful on here. I'll apologise in advance if my questions are very basic. I have some patches of kniphofias which area always so untidy. I have pulled with my hands lots of loose long bits out like you do with some grasses but they still looked very straggly. I have now cut them back to about 6-8 inches. Is this ok or does this plant not really like this treatment. One year i tied them up with string but wasn't sure it that would encourage the clump to rot? Do I need to just learn to live with the untidiness of them? Many thanks for your help.

Thank you both for your quick replies. Im guessing you don't like Pokers Jo! Thanks for the advice about siting them Verdun, seems obvious now you say that!
Yes they are at the front of a slightly raised border with retaining sleeper but I always have to lift the 'hair' out of the way every time i cut the grass! I have a north facing garden and they are facing east which I don't think they like either. Think I will re-site to face west and put them near or at the back. I have lots of forget me nots that have self seeded all around that area so that was another reason i gave them a haircut!
Should i move them now or wait until spring? Thanks again for your replies.
Thank you both for your replies. Twice tonight i have typed a reply only to realise Im not logged in and the entire message has vanished!
Will hopefully get the hang of this! In a nutshell, really appreciate the advice, will hopefully move them tomorrow as hubby is around in the morning to help with a little digging
. I am def in need of some autumn colour here. Have been inspired by one of the other threads where everyone has posted pics of their gardens and amazed at how much colour you all have. Although i did plant Rudbeckia Goldstrum last year that i bought at Wisley - not sure where it ran off to as it never came back!!
. Dug up some begenias last month too as along with the pokers I was thinking although lovely in flower for a short spell they are rather dull the rest of the year. Thanks again for your advice - I will let you know how I get on.
I never log out copperdog, just leave logged in for a quick look later.
