David, I've lots of sweet pea seeds. Can I sow them now and keep them in the polytunnel?

Should ( if I can ) sow some now and some later?

    Devon.
  • Hosta - Just as you like. However if you sow now you will need a little heat (about 10c/50f) to germinate the seed. But I have to be honest and say that as we are near to mid-Feb, you might as well wait for another month and sow them all under natural conditions.

Also, there will be absolutely no difference in those sown at either time.

Was going to sow mine in an unheated GH this weekend....but sounds like you would recommend holding off for a few weeks David - have I got that right?

    Hi David,

I'm feeling really inspired by your sweet pea hanging basket photo. I've got a couple of Plantopia hanging baskets which have sections with grates around the sides of the basket for plants to grow through. Do you think sowing sweet pea seeds directly in to this type of basket would work? I would love to get the kind of effect you've got with your basket.

I'm also planning to grow some sweet peas using a wicker obelisk - do the sweet peas tend to attach themselves to this kind of support, or will I need to tie in?

Thanks for any help you can give,

I hope somebody can help. I grew a variety of sweetpeas years ago and they were the best i had ever grown they were called knee high. Do they still exist?

Lucid - I always grow my sweet peas on a tripod of canes in pots. Although they will attach themselves, it helps to give them some support and tie them in as they grow. They get a bit wild and wayward otherwise! image

    Yes, they do, Bushman: www.amazon.co.uk/Sweet-Pea-Knee-Mixed-Seeds/dp/B00AHUM1NW

  • Lucid - I can't see why your 'Plantopia' shouldn't work, although sowing directly would have been best done in the autumn. If these baskets are for this summers display, I would use plants.

Re wicker obelisks, I don't have any experience of them, so I would take Fairygirls advice.
