Sweet Pea Know How

  • GD - As I've said many times, sweet peas are designated as 'hardy'...they are in fact very hardy and will stand many degrees of frost. The problems begin when people make them soft by coddling them.

Given what you say (and taking into account where you live)  I would say that yours could be safely planted outdoors now. As also said before, provide a little protection from cold winds.

On the subject of their hardiness, there is no reason why they can't (in most locations) be sown directly outdoors in October......I don't do this, but it does indicate how hardy they are.

  • Thanks for the re-assurance David. For me the fact that the sweet pea is fleshy, green & all new growth indicates something that is delicate - so that is why I have treated them the same as all my other seedlings which haven't been planted out yet either. Wind is a major factor here - and the pots I have planted the s.p's in are very heavy so once they are in their outdoor place they will have to stay put (already put my back out twice this year from lifting heavy pots & full watering cans). Your advice & encouragement is invaluable - thanks.

Hi all, i've had a sort of colonade put  up actually for a rambler rose but as it#s only 8 ins high at the mo thought I'd grow sweet peas up this year, the wooden posts are 6foot high and around 6 feet apart, would I be best to put pea netting up? if so, how should I attach, and as I usually plant my sp's up obelisks how should I space them?

ooh just saw painted lady grew that year before last and really loved it

  • I suppose that would be 8ft, rosemummy. Just attach pea-netting to the wooden posts with wood staples......making it as taut as possible would mean that it would less untidy later in the season.

  • 'Wooden staples'......what turn of phrase is that?  image I mean metal wire-netting staples, of course.

Hi DavidK, I've sown some April in Paris sweetpea seeds and they appear to be growing by the hour on my kitchen windowsill, I just wanted to know what the next stage is and when please, thank you image

  • Footnote to the 'Painted Lady' sweet pea.....anyone notice it's the same colour as the flowers on the old Victorian runner bean of the same name?......Need to find the significance of that.

  • Hi, Wonkey.....they need transferring to somewhere cool, asp....a coldframe, mini-plastic greenhouse etc.

PS. Don't give up on those who haven't surfaced yet. image

Righto David, will do! Clearing out plastic greenhouse thing and making space amongst annual seedlings just moved to the top of my to do list! Thanks David image
