rose
I had a mature climbing rose which died a couple of years ago. As it died of drought rather than disease, can I plant another in the same place? A nearby old apple tree died at the same time so they won't be fighting each other for water. Thanks in advance B
In London. Keen but lazy.

Roses should be planted in a different place as you get rose replant disease. Some people say that using mycorrhizal fungi when planting can stop this happening. I also once read about digging a big hole putting a large cardboard box into the hole, filling the box with new soil, and then planting into this. The theory being that by the time to box has rotted the plant will be well established.
Thanks W. I will have to try a more creative option. Have a clematis on other side of pergola/ bench thing. Maybe should try another.
And thanks f
Mycorrhizal fungi products work fine so if you want to plant another rose do so,has for depleted soil just put some bonemeal around when you plant.
Thanks pansy. Daren't use bonemeal. The foxes dig it up! Will follow link
I wouldn't use bonemeal if you have dogs. Mine went mad for it and I had to put string round everything I'd treated!
When I replaced a dead climbing rose (it had been decimated by deer over the years, now have a fence) I removed 2 wheelbarrow loads of earth and replaced it with earth from the veggie garden, compost and manure. New rose is doing OK.
Bought some of that M stuff today. Will remove some soil and dump it away from roses or on compost heap. The Will have the fun bit. Choosing a rose. Like to do it this time of year as you can have a sniff.
