Is it a relatively new bed?  Was it lawn before it was potato patch?

Hmm, wireworm are often a problem in old grassland that has been put to vegetables in the first year, but as they're the larvae of click beetles that live in the grass, as they pupate and turn into adults they then leave the veg patch move to grassland.

The traditional remedy for wireworm is to run some poultry on the land for a while - they'll clear them up.

Another solution is to grow earlier maturing potatoes - it tends to be later maturing types that suffer the most.
