Break up the rootballs and rake them in too or leaver the broken up rootballs on the soil and let the worms have them. It's all good humic material and will add structure to the soil. . As others have suggested reuse as potting compost
I tend to take out the top half and use it on the raised beds. I dig over the bottom half to break up the roots, bang some plant food in and put fresh stuff in the top. As Lydiaann says, it can cost quite a bit especially with larger pots. Never had any problems.
