I admired me friend's Irises SOE time ago and this week she has given me one she has dug up -finished flower stalk and all! How shall I plant it - shall I cut it?

If this is a bearded iris then you must plant it with some of the rhizome proud of the soil surface so that the sun can get to it. Trim the leaves to half their height. Remove the flower stalk.
