The best compost i have used is Sinclair Pro50 growing medium and Sinclair Summer Hanging Basket also Sinclair seed sowing compost great results with them all.
I seem to have cornered the market on Westlands Growsure Vegetable growing compost this year. It was on offer at one of our local garden centres and so far I seem to have bought about 15 x 60 litre bags (not all for my own garden I would add). I've been very impressed with the composition of the compost and it's consistency. For my tomatoes in the GH I've bought extra large Levingtons grow bags, though I haven't planted anything in them yet - next week should see them planted up (hopefully). I usually buy J Arthur Bowers MPC but have gone with Westlands this year as it produced best results for me last year just eclipsing the JAB.
I bought three Levington's MP compost this year, and was bitterly disappointed. In fact, I was so upset that, having had to sieve it all to make it usable, I sent a letter of complaint (and samples of sieved-out twigs/grit/glass/stones etc). They replied and graciously sent me a voucher for other products, assuring me that they were looking into sourcing material for compost that would overcome such problems. But it has been hard work trying to make the compost fit for purpose!
I tried Aldi again this year and the £1.09 bags are ok if you only need small quantities for potting on seedlings. Only a few twigs and I've had no damping off this year with it.
Another interesting thread! I bought some B+Q compost a few years ago, and it seems to have been full of weed seeds, have been weeding ever since I had no idea that compost could vary from year to year, so am interested I what you peeps would recommend for potting a rather beautiful half hardy fuchsia I bought a few weeks ago - it seems quite happy in its pot, but needs to go in a slightly bigger one for a more permanent solution.
Bought some fresh compost yesterday, decided to go for J Arthur Bowers seed and cutting compost with added sand and I have to say I am very impressed with the quality: fine, friable peaty textured mix.
I had a bag of JAB multi-purpose compost in the greenhouse from last year and it is very coarse with hard lumps that needed breaking down. I did that & mixed some vermiculite with it but the new bag is very much better.
Just bought wickes topsoil and multi purpose compost to refresh veggi bed and looks like both are good quality with no nasties within. Time will tell I guess.
Funny how different people have totally opposite views re the same product. I wonder what criterion each is based on. For my money I think I'd trust 'Which' who do have a reputation for thoroughness but despite that I do like the JAB Seed & Cutting compost so I'm staying with that for my seeds!

Last year Verve was voted the worst compost by Which, they advised not to buy it.
