Just a thought re clematis. That one I mentioned flowers early of course, and then you get the seedheads. In late spring you could stick some sweet peas in at the base if the notion took you. Then you'd have flowers/interest from late winter onwards, for not much effort
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
It really occurred to me because I have that clematis in a really narrow little bed by my back gate and it's very neat. I use sweet peas further along in the bigger bed with the other, larger clematis.

I thought of that Hosta but no flowers or berries which Steve wanted if possible.
It's Constance. Faces slightly north west and gets some shade from midday sun because it's tucked in by my gate and back fence. It was very tangled and bundled round a cane when I bought it, so I just had to do the best I could at the time, but it could do with hacking back so that I could spread the stems better. I have another clematis beside it though, which is in full flower, so a bit tricky! Had only been in about 18 months when that pic was taken.

Fairly flat,,,that was not! I think a clematis or two would be best.

Ta FG, something like that had occurred to me as a possibility too.

Here's a pic Steve
The bed it's in is only about a foot deep and the same height. It narrows to nothing at the gate but the clematis is in the widest bit.
That pic was in early May

you get those funny little whitish flowers on euonymus .
Methinks Steve is being a greedy boy. Evergreen, flowers, fruit, not too big, not too small, tsk, anything else Steve?
He wants it all Hosta - I don't know....what's he like?

That sounds good Jo - don't know that at all. Will google
