help needed please
hi , i am looking to buy a lilac tree, i just love the scent and it reminds me of my childhood. whilst looking around a lilac shrub/tree keeps appearing syringa vulgaris it looks pretty and it says it is highly scented/ 2 questions does anyone know are they highly scented as described and is the scent the same as what i call old fashined lilac? i would be so grateful for any advise as i dont know much at all and dont want to get this wrong . thanks.

Yes.. Syringa vulgaris is very scented and will be the one you know from your childhood.
Now there are many named Syringa vulgaris cultivars in different colours... from deep to light purple, almost maroon to white.
Some even have double flowers.

..Syringa vulgaris is lilac, yes... if you are going to buy one, I recommend a variety called 'Katharine Havemeyer', which has the old fashioned scent, plus it's also a lilac colour...

Syringa vulgaris Katherine Havemyer is one with double flowers.

I have a miniature lilac growin a tub tha I have had for 30 odd years and repooted it this so have som cuttings growing .If you live anywhere near Bournemouth you are welcome to one .the smell is divine and quite strong.
...^oh..I think that's a nice idea actually... they grow small-tree-like eventually, so you would have all the top growth and most of the flowers peering over your fence... and if anyone complained, well you could just say you didn't plant it... it just grew...
