Definitely more of a lemon yellow in my garden ......but it grows to 8 foot without any staking so is wonderful at the back of my borders at this time of year. I think it looks great with the purple asters.
My Welsh poppies are a very buttery yellow, they grow like weeds here, I am in Wales of course and lemon queen is very like a lemon , I grow that too. Distinct difference.
How fast does it spread? A new plant in this year, it has grown to 7 ft and is flowering, but as a narrow pillar if that makes sense. I would like a patch a few feet across. Do I need more plants or split this one, or leave it to spread naturally?
Mine haven't spread very far Fidget - and they have been in 5 years. I would do some splitting if you want them to cover an area. I planted in threes, and they are still distinct plants even now.
I was given an innocent looking clump of these several years ago and planted it in my very fertile rear garden whose soil has been cow pasture for centuries so well fertilised. It went berserk - very tall and spreading madly but very good as a tall, back of border plant with clear yellow flowers.
Since then I have dug it all up, split and shared with friends and the bits I kept have been planted in poorer soil with more fierce drainage in full sun. There it doesn't spread as fast and gets to between 3 and 6 feet high and is perfect. Lovely plant and colour in the right place.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

Well, it spreads for us like Obelixx experienced. There is another one with slightly paler lemon coloured flowers which so far has remained a small clump. Helianthus giganteus 'Sheila's Sunshine'

Some helianthus are very invasive but Her Majesty is well behaved, although my one plant is still 5 feet wide at the top. She is 6-7 feet tall.
