Brassica Problem

For the past 2 years I have had a severe problem with leaf rot. At first I thought it was lack of air due to too small mesh butterfly netting. This year I have changed the netting for one with larger mesh but the problem has returned. Any Help welcome.

TIA

  • Looks like a fungal infection but that could be an after effect following attacck by some kind of sap-sucking pest, with aphids, whitefly or flea beetle being the most likely.  If you haven't done it for a while, I would try dosing whichever section of ground you will be using next year with garden lime this winter.  This will reduce the acidity and in doing so will reduce the likelihood of pests and diseases as most prefer acidic conditions.  Brassicas also prefer slightly alkaline soil.  I would also give the area a good sprinking of fish, blood and bone next spring before you plant anything out, just in case it is a nutrient deficiency of some kind.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks for the replies. I will clear the whole lot out and take to the local tip, then sterilise the ground with Jeyes Fluid, leave to biodegrade for a month, then as you suggest, dose it with lime. then add the nutrients in spring. Hopefully in 12 months I can report back as problem solved.
