Hydrangeas
in Talkback
My hydrangea didn't flower very well this year. Flowers formed, but were quite small and all the petals didn't appear to open. Some of the flower buds turned black and were easily rubbed off. I moved it last year from a large wooden tub into my main border area as it was getting pot-bound, but put it in a corner, although it is well sheltered, gets plenty of sunlight. Could moving it affect its flowering, or could it be something else?

Hi Patricia, there could be many reasons, but here's a couple to think about
As you've planted it into the ground after being pot bound, it may not have settled very well. Often plant roots will continue to go round in a circle rather than spreading out into the surrounding soil, so they need a bit of teasing out when planted. Also, they need lots of water, so it's important to keep them well watered until established. If the ground it's in dries out rapidly, it would benefit from some well rotted manure and good compost to help retain moisture. A mulch, after the initial thorough watering, will also assist.
