i have just sowed my seeds into fresh new beds. i mixed sand and stones into my clay soil and turned the soil at a spade deep allover. the seeds in the pots are all sprouting well but i have moved them into the shed because of the rain(which has now gone and its going to be sunny all week..AAAGGGHh) .I think im going to keep them in the shed over winter with a lamp......

Don,t want to sound rude Rich B, but I think we are trying to tell you something and I am not sure that you want to listen.

My potted poppy seedlings seem to be doing OK at 2" tall, currently out in the sunshine. I have built a large cold frame to over winter the best few. I have noticed that the main root from the seed is above ground, horizontal, about 1" long and the vegetation grows vertical from that. Is this normal??All 50ish are the same. Ill post a pic tomrrow.

Sounds like they've been starved of light. That's why they're growing horizontally to begin with. As Jo says - artificially forcing them will make them leggy.

I'm not sure why you moved them into a shed because it was raining. image

If they're in a suitable gritty compost, excess water runs through. A sheltered spot is all they require to keep them from drowning in heavy winter rainfall when they're small and more vulnerable.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
