Any idea what this is - or what it will become? I find a lot when weeding - wondering if I should squash them

that looks like a leather jacket. Have a look at google images to see check.
Yes, my first thought was leatherjacket (cranefly larva) - I squidge them and put them where the blackbirds will find them. If you have chickens they'll like them
They eat the roots of your lawn and some other plants.
