Watermelon in the UK?
in Fruit & veg
Hi, I have just had a watermelon (Grown in Spain). Just wanted to ask if you think it would be possible to grow in the UK using a plastic cover for heat. Or is this just not possible?
Thanks.

They need pretty much the same conditions as pumpkins. As much sun and warmth as possible. They're a vine so probably difficult to cover appropriately and they would fill up a greenhouse pretty quickly.
Bob Flowerdew would know the answer to this question.
I have never seen the seeds for an actual water melon in gardens/ nurseries , would you use the seed from your own watermelon ?
Other melons grow well in a greenhouse though .
Seeds from a bought watermelon would only be worthwhile if it were an heirloom variety. Seeds from a hybrid variety won't produce true to type.
Watermelons also need a lot of space to grow in.
