Have I killed my bearded irises?

nutcutletnutcutlet Posts: 27,445

They looked really naff so this morning I dug them up, chucked out the old bits, cut down the tops, planted the best bits with the tuber on the surface, watered them in and spoke nicely to them.

Is it far too late in the year to do this or will they be OK?

  • I divided mine up and moved to a new bed about 3 weeks ago, the main leaves look a bit sulky, but there are lots of fresh new shoots, so I'm sure yours will be OK.  Also moved another clump (Dusky Challenger) yesterday, only bought them in Spring and didn't get any flowers, so I'm hoping for better luck next year.

I have two pots of Iris Robusta "Gerald Derby", which I bought months ago, they are growing out over the the lips of the small pots I bought them in. Does anybody know if these can be easily divided?  The root ball looks like a really solid mass.

Is it common for them not to flower in the first year?  I planted mine in a sunny south facing spot, they are at the correct depth and nothing shades them.  I had lots of leaf growth, they look really healthy, but sadly no flowers.

I've had a good number of flower free years Yvie. I've almost dumped them, then I get a spectacular year
