I have a brilliant book called "right plant right place". i still use it regularly and i'm a very old "beginner". it's great if you have difficult areas in your garden. it might be worth trying to find a copy or as Hostafan says....google it!
Other significant words are 'tender', that means they won't survive a winter in the UK climate and 'half-hardy' which means they might survive in coastal Cornwall
