Tell me about my raspberries?

I took over an allotment earlier this year. There is a patch of raspberries which was cut right back. They have grown quite well, I think. I've weeded and fed them, and we have had a small amount of fruit from some of the plants over the last 5 or 6 weeks.

My question is, the fruit came from canes which have grown to about 2-3 feet tall. The taller canes which are now 5 feet or so have not flowered. Is it that these are mixed varieties, and one of them needs to flower/fruit on last year's growth?

Thanks, Paul.

  • They could be a mixed batch. Summer fruiting raspberries fruit on last year's canes, autumn fruiting raspberries fruit on this year's growth. Don't cut back the canes until later next spring. Then you will be able to see whether they are coming into leaf again (summer fruiting) or are dead (autumn ones). Don't cut any new growth!

  • Thanks, I'll do that.

  • It sounds to me as if you have a mixture of autumn and summer varieties as I would have expected any autumn ones to have fruited this year.

Also, I think autumn raspberries will fruit again in the 2nd year if they're left unpruned so you might not be any the wiser if you leave them!

The safest way would be to cut down any that have fruited in February and to leave any that haven't to fruit next year.

  • Thanks. It seems that the consensus is to wait and see what happens next year. I'll let you know!
