Thanks all, chainsaw it is! I'll need to start with vertical cuts to separate it into managable chunks I think, otherwise I'll never get it through the gate to the shredder!
Good idea to remove a few roots to introduce other shrubs Tetley, if I can - looking at the base, some of the stems are about 4-5 inches dia., so fall under 'trunks' in my book. I can still swing a pick-axe though - just not so good up ladders as I was!
I'll post photos of the massacre as I go!
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
i read that, if possible, it's best to rejuvenate a privet one side at a time. i think the phrase was "responds well to a jolly good thrashing". something to that effect anyway.
as fairygirl says, take it to the max.
fyi i have a mixed hedge on my Field side and it is ghastly to try and keep in order. often i just beg a farmer to do it with the "lawnmower on a stick" attachment on his tractor.

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I'm reminded of a piece an opera critic friend wrote
" at the time Johnathan Morris described critics as "a bunch bitter old opera queens"
I was rather offended as I was only 28 at the time"
