Hi Lucid it might take a lot longer though. I got deep down into my heavy clay by swinging a large pick axe down into it many times and so easing up large clumps at a time to make it easier to break down with a garden fork afterwards, (I asked the OH to take over when i was near collapsing point lol). It's hard going and your neighbours might think you're a physcho but, hey ho has to be done! P.s I'd leave this until the winter/frost is over now, ideally you want your clay to be dry to work with.
At this time of year it would be time well spent to collect some fallen leaves to act as a soil improver. They come free if there are any available nearby (even if you collect them from the street as I do) and even if you cannot be bothered to compost them they make a useful mulch and will encourage worms to do a lot of the hard graft of soil improvement for you as well as protecting the roots of any pants you decide to leave in situ for the Winter. Some folk claim that the street leaves absorb pollution but I have never had a problem with this.

Does the grit in the lawn cracks work? I once turned the hose on down a crack until I got bored. No sign of the water. No idea where it went.
water will disappear , grit stays there forever.
