Mine are almost defoliated in spite of my picking effort. For the first few years we didn't see any and I know what a lovely yellow the leaves turn in autumn.
Did anything work Josh? i have three willows (one 3.5 years old and two only a year old) the two little ones are covered in sawfly larvae. i sprayed the washng up liquid solution over but the trees went brown. When the leaves came out again, so did the little critters. i bought some "Bugsoff" spray that lists sawfly on the back. one hour after spraying, the sawfly larvae were back to eating. would love to know if there is anything organic i can use but they seem to be immune to everything - advise please....... thanks in anticipation
The only thing I could do was to spray a fairly weak mixture of washing up liquid and water on the branches, leave it for a while (an hour or two), then rinse the sprayed areas clean with a hose (so the tree wasn't so badly impacted). The hour or two of weak mix was enough to kill the larvae but without harming the tree (too much). Anyway, it would have been eaten bare by the larvae, in any case.
