Leaf curl

advice please.  I have an Apple bush that has previously produced lovely big apples but for the past couple of years has had curly, brown leaves with very small fruit.

is it time to put it out of its misery?  Can I still use the fruit?  Can it be saved?

  • I agree with pansyface - sounds like lack of water - not in a pot is it?  The leaves could be getting powdery mildew at some stage which causes damage like you mention Anne, and lack of water is usually the cause.  I don't know where you are, but many places (especially the East of England) had very low rainfall earlier this year and I had to regularly water several of my apple trees, something I've never had to do before with those in the ground.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • I'm in North West.  The tree is in an area of about 1 metre square but there is also a climbing rose in there too.  I try to keep it weed free and ensure there is plenty of water when the weather's dry.

  • Not seen many pests at all this year.  Funnily enough, I had a major prune in the front garden.  I'd had a philadelphus for years but it's not flowered for a long time.  A honeysuckle had found its way in there but also had these curly brown leaves so I started pruning but ended up ripping the lot out.  It just all came away as I hate pulling plants up.  lets loads of light in now so hope the lecky bill's much cheaper.
